Public swimming pools
Public swimming pools (or public swimming baths as they are also known) are council run swimming facilities open to any member of the public for usually a small set fee. Public swimming pools usually have set times for various age ranges, including under 16s, OAPs, families, ladies only, toddlers and open-to-all. Very soon all public swimming pools will offer FREE under 16s and FREE over 60s swimming.

Private swimming pools
Private swimming pools are usually offered within private members only health club facilities, including David Lloyds, Virgin Active, Fitness First and the like. These swimming pools are typically 20m to 25m long and are open to any health club member from between 6 am and 10 pm, Monday to Friday and 8 am to 8 pm at the weekend.
In order to cater for health and fitness lovers they will also house aqua aerobic classes at particular times of the day.

Olympic sized swimming pools
Only a hand full of Olympic sized swimming pools are located in the UK. One such example is Ponds Forge in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Olympic swimming pools are 50m in length and are typically laned off for the more hard core swimmer. If you have never swam in an Olympic sized pool let me tell you that swimming none stop for 50m indoors is not for the faint of heart.

Leisure pools
Typically leisure pools incorporate wave machines, water spas, pool showers and water slides to add to the watersports experience. They usually also include a typical swimming pool but due to the popularity of the other things on offer you may find the swimming pool over crowded at given times.
